Moors
and Christians
Spaniards
are celebrating the expulsion of Arabs, the Moros y Cristianos festival.
Moros
y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) - is the name of the festival which takes
place in April (21-24) in Spain, during which parades and symbolic scenes
reminiscent of the expulsion of Muslim Moors in 1492. It is especially popular
in the south-east of Spain. Carried out at different dates, they are a mixture
of religion, history and street carnival.
Arabs
conquered a large part of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century. Even
though it's hard to deny the impact of their expansion on the technological and
cultural development of Spain at that time, they were never welcome there. Although
the four-day long fiesta, the Moros y Cristianos, is organized in many places
in the Mediterranean part of Spain the most spectacular ones are held in the
province of Alicante belonging to the Autonomous Community of Valencia.
