Flamenco
- a cultural phenomenon, related to the folklore of Andalusian Gypsies, that
includes music, songs, dance, costumes and behavior. It's tradition comes from
Andalusia, and it's performence can be seen there even today. In 2010 flamenco
was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
What's
flamenco about? By dancing, a performer tells a story. In flamenco, body
movements and gestures express certain emotional states of the dancer or
emphasize the meaning of the words and character of the melody that accompanies
them. It is a dance performed solo, in a duet, in a group or consists of
subsequent "solos" performed by individual dancers. Music is mainly
performed on the guitar. From the point of view of the nature of performed music,
we can distinguish the following types of flamenco: cante jondo, cante
intermedio, cante chico.
Have
you ever seen this type of dancing? Do you like it?
